— // POWERS && ABILITIES: SUMIMURA YOSHIMORI

hazama-ryu kekkaijutsu // primary ability of && exclusive to the kekkaishi families of sumimura && yukimura assigned to protect karasumori academy site against demons. typically takes the shape of cubes && rectangles; can vary in size, length, && color, && are able to be layered on top of one another. yukimura kekkai take the color green while sumimura’s take the color blue. in general, the bigger the kekkai = the greater amount of power used && can lead to fatigue ( albeit this is rarely seen applied to yoshimori, despite his tendency for large kekkai ). if a kekkai is destroyed by an enemy, the kekkaishi will feel a zap in their hand used to cast it, the pain being more severe depending on the strength of the enemy && how much power it took to cast it. hōi designates a target, jōso determines where the kekkai will be created, ketsu creates && activates the kekkai. kai dispels the kekkai without injury, && metsu destroys the kekkai, with the goal of injuring or killing anything inside. kekkai stability is also tied to the emotional && mental state of the user.

— shuufuku // high level technique. restoration art, repairs objects, && appears as a glowing from the hands of a kekkaishi. used in conjunction with shikigami to repair objects simultaneously. used most often at karasumori after the nightly defense is over && cleanup is required, although it can also be used to restore the beds of gods. *seeing that their founder believed normal people should not become involved in the happenings of the supernatural world, this technique was developed to maintain the veil of normalcy. **kekkaishi are not allowed to use the restoration technique outside of karasumori.

— nenshi // a technique that creates a flexible, thread-shaped kekkai, && come from the palm of the user. they are used for binding, capturing, && torture by squeezing. the collar seals around the sumimura’s spirit wolf, madarao, && the yukimura’s spirit wolf, hakubi, are made of beads strung around a nenshi thread.

— zekkai // an expert level technique that creates a unique kekkai which surrounds the user in a sphere; it allows the user to either repel an attack or harm an enemy. it appears as a black aura that varies in form depending on the skill of the user. because it is created by the domination of negative feelings, it is recommended that it should not be used excessively. ***yoshimori has managed to strengthen his own zekkai to the point it closely resembled a complete spherical one, although he is most comfortable with his own, imperfect version. it manifests as a black flaming aura surrounding his silhouette. it eliminates many things that come into contact with it, however it can be overpowered, && its potency depends greatly on yoshimori’s focus && emotional state.

— shinkai // master level technique, && therefore the highest level of the hazama-ryu kekkaijutsu. it is a technique that produces a massive, spherical aura of light, && is essentially creating a new world. it consumes much more power than a zekkai, &&, in comparison, a zekkai will erase everything that it comes into contact with, whereas a shinkai will initialize everything. because of the amount of power required to create a shinkai, if a mere human would try to complete one, it would be a gamble on their life. within the aura, the user is able to manipulate virtually anything: creating or restoring that which he desires, && discarding that which he does not desire. when used for the purpose of sealing, a shinkai must be completely closed from the inside, requiring a kekkaishi ( not necessarily the creator ) to remain within, presumably for the rest of their or the shinkai’s life, whichever expires first. *in the founder’s words, this technique is close to the power of a god. **to date, only two kekkaishi have been known to successfully use this technique: the founder, tokimori hazama, && yoshimori sumimura. yoshimori’s first successful shinkai was completed on instinct, && he was left entirely unresponsive following it.

— musou // otherwise known as a “blank” state, && an expert level technique. a state of mind where the user is not influenced by any force. it increases speed, power, && effectiveness of the kekkaijutsu. mastering this requires three steps: accessing the state, maintaining the state, && finally summoning a landlord, a clone of the user that maintains the connection to the heart. the state shuts down the conscious mind && separates the power from emotions, leading to more purified attacks. to effectively enter the state, one must allow their mind to float from their body without a care for anything. the mind && body are thus free from the constraint of time. ***yoshimori’s musou state allows him to create seemingly indestructible kekkai in large numbers without any sign of fatigue or strain. it should be noted that the musou state is not a boost in a power, rather it is his original power with the impurities removed.

— landlord // a product of the musou state, && a requirement if a kekkaishi wishes to master it. they are necessary because, while in the state, senses are sharpened to an extremely high level, so if a user were to be attacked, the damage would be equally high. the landlord are clones of the user brought out in order to control their powers. when one leaves everything up to a landlord, they will only use the power necessary for the situation. a state where one can bring out your power to the fullest, a landlord that can ideally put into order, especially a landlord that will become a partner that can save you. however once a landlord is brought forth, it cannot be altered. the form is also fixed, so if one does it poorly it will be useless. **shiguma is yoshimori’s landlord, && is summoned whenever yoshimori is in his blank state. shiguma takes the form of a black && white striped cube with red eyes that morphs into various animal && humanoid shapes. shiguma can also relay yoshimori’s subconscious thoughts to his conscious mind, thus allowing the conscious yoshimori to understand && analyze the world around him in ways he never could otherwise. as an extension of yoshimori, shiguma shares his taste for brute force at the expense of subtlety. shiguma tends to have a blunt, straightforward way of speaking. ***shiguma’s powers include transformation, allowing him to assume various shapes while active, && power regulation. as a landlord, shiguma’s main task is to regulate yoshimori’s power while he is in the musou state, using only what is necessary && greatly decreasing the chances that yoshimori will be wounded by an enemy. shiguma also maintains the connection to yoshimori’s heart, as there is a risk it can be lost while manipulating so much power.

— sensory kekkai // used while in the blank state, this technique allows yoshimori to extend his senses && investigate the surrounding area, gaining a great deal of information in the process, including the location of any nearby enemies. however, it can only be maintained for an instant. this technique was taught to him by his mother’s shikigami.

spiritual power // even among the sumimura kekkaishi, all of whom seem to possess a great deal of spiritual power, yoshimori has far more than even their standards would suggest is normal. this routinely makes him capable of feats normally considered impossible.

enhanced regeneration // one of the side-effects of his enormous amount of spiritual power is that he can heal from most minor injuries rapidly when pushed to the limit.

supernatural sense // like all kekkaishi && those tied to the supernatural, yoshimori is able to sense all negative energy, or jyaki aura, unless it is being purposefully masked. it lets him know when an ayakashi, ghost, or ill-willed god is in the area, but not their exact location, && is used multiple times a night. jyaki tends to flare for more dangerous && larger demons, or when one is about to transform due to karasumori’s influence. more powerful beings produce highly potent auras that can be sensed over a great distance, && may even overwhelm lesser beings that come in contact with it.

supernatural endurance // yoshimori repeatedly proves to have endurance in the range of superhuman in combat. he almost never reaches a point where he grows notably fatigued in battle. while some of this can be attributed to karasumori’s power supporting him as a legitimate successor, yoshimori still possesses this trait even while removed from the site, proving that this is indeed a natural ability separate from karasumori’s power.

supernatural stamina // even when pushed to the limit, yoshimori is never seen to tire out during intense combat, due to the immense amount of spiritual power he possesses.

— // EQUIPMENT

shakujō // yoshimori typically carries a shakujō while on duty. while primarily used to perform tenketsu, it can also serve as a secondary weapon, a cutting tool, or a means of support when fatigued. however, it is fairly common for him to discard his shakujō until it is needed. **tenketsu is a technique that opens a door to another world && primarily sends the remains of an ayakashi through to prevent regeneration. can also be altered to establish contact with a local god.

shikigami paper // commonly referred to as shiki for short, are paper dolls that follow the commands of their creator. they are commonly used as clones, messengers, && workers. unactivated shikigami usually appear as simple slips of paper with an identifying mark on them; in the case of kekkaishi, the houin mark ( a simple square ) appears. a shikigami is activated once its creator applies a certain amount of power to its paper && provides a desired shape, typically a small doll, bird, or clone. a shikigami returns to its paper form if one or more of the following conditions is met: the shikigami’s intended purpose is accomplished ;; the shikigami uses up its allotted power ;; the shikigami takes too much damage or is destroyed ( in which case a portion of its paper will be damaged ) ;; the shikigami is captured, && either cuts off its own power to avoid questioning, or reverts to paper form on command. shikigami paper are always carried by kekkaishi. **in the case of shikigami birds, yukimura birds are white doves with a black houin on its chest, && sumimura birds are black crows with a white houin on its chest. ***kekkaishi are connected to their shikigami. they’re able to tell when their shikigami is destroyed or about to be destroyed, && when it is being attacked. depending on the amount of power used when creating shikigami, kekkaishi can be easily worn out if both they && their shiki are active. this was one of the few times yoshimori has been shown to be fatigued.

shidou’s feather // as a token of thanks for helping kokuunsai, yoshimori was given one of shidou’s feathers. though it appears ordinary, when yoshimori waves the feather, he can summon && communicate with any nearby crows.
